Queen Charlotte Drive is renowned as one of the best roads in NZ and possibly the world, if you believe all you are told by the locals, and it didn’t disappoint!
After our smooth and sunny crossing (from Wellington) yesterday we made it to Picton. Megan and Kayleigh you will be happy to hear there was no repeat of the Thailand crossing.
In Wellington we stocked up ready for a couple of days on the road, too much food?? What do you think Ingrid are we possibly carrying too much?
Making friends in the morning.
As we left Picton even the ferry terminal looked pretty.
As we climber S-bend after S-bend the views became evermore breathtaking with mountain upon mountain opening up before us.
We had 54km to do with a couple of climbs. Our legs felt so fresh after our days off in Wellington we were zooming along. Though there are many picture opportunities to stop for. I think I had the GoPro on the entire ride (well get round to posting some footage when we get a chance). We arrived just after lunch time to Pelrous Bridge, probably the nicest campsite we have ever stayed at. Walks to waterfalls huge swimming hole and Palm tree shaded camp spot. During the afternoon we ventured into the forest in hunt of a waterfall, but due to the drought only find a trickle, Helen you would have been gutted!!
Afterwards we cooled off in the river. The water is crystal clear and is so inviting (cold). Asking a local about drinking creek water out here we got the answer ‘of course you can drink it! Where do you come from?’. We are still being cautious as to not to get ill.
The rest of the evening I was wiped out with mild sunstroke. I had been drinking all day, but I think I pushed too hard on the ride and didn’t hydrate enough after, whoops.
