Had a great evening hosting what in all likelihood will be, due to upcoming house move, our last ever Warm Showers guest at Grayshott Road!
Our guest was a very mild (possibly due to the seasickness) chap called Sam, originally form Essex. After spending his 20’s working in the city Sam only bought his first adult bike on a whim a couple of years ago and hasn’t been off it since. Like us he opted to be car free and instead commuted by bike the 14 miles a day to and from work. This helping to quickly build up his stamina and it wasn’t long before he was setting sail to mainland Europe for his first tour!
Sam had been away for almost a year now and spent much of his time working through WWOOFing and HelpX. This consisted of short 1-3 week stints helping out on farms etc with payment coming in the form of food and shelter. This is definitely an area we would love to experience and get involved with ourselves in the future as it not only allows you to meet some fantastic people, turn your hand to some interesting jobs and extend your tour at no extra cost!
Sam’s route took him around North West France, down the West Coast, through the Pyrenees, including summing the famous Col du Tourmalet twice! Into Spain where he saw pilgrimages on the el camino de santiago and then all the way around the Spanish and Portuguese coast line, before retracing his steps back up to St Malo and across the choppy channel to Portsmouth.
It was great to meet Sam and hear all about his amazing year and we wish him well with the last few legs of his trip and what ever new adventures lie ahead!
